A small 45 ml porcelain cup from Miyama's White Line series, decorated in kamahen gosu (窯変呉須) — a "reactive cobalt blue" pigment formulated to melt and flow during firing. The deep blue liquefies in the kiln and drifts across the white body, so no two cups carry the same pattern. The porcelain itself is a thin, glass-bearing clay (hakuji) that lets light through at the rim.
Miyama is a porcelain workshop in Mizunami, Gifu, working in the 1,300-year Mino-yaki tradition. The White Line series is the studio's most quietly experimental: the maker sets the firing conditions, the kiln finishes the picture. Variation between pieces is the technique, not a flaw.
