A silk fireworks (hanabi, 花火) brooch, folded petal by petal in the centuries-old tsumami technique. Japan's summer firework festivals didn't start as entertainment — they began as memorials, with shells launched to console the dead and to pray for health, peace, and protection from disease. That history is the reason hanabi feels, even now, more solemn than celebratory at the moment of the first burst.

This piece captures that first burst — the single flare that opens the night. The petals run from saturated purple at the base into warm orange and yellow tips, against a purple silk ground rather than the usual deep black, so the brooch reads like a sky just before full nightfall. Glass parts catch light at the center the way the highest sparks do.

Made by Tsumami Kanzashi Ayano, the Matsudo workshop led by Ayano Fujii — a designated maker of Chiba Prefecture's traditional craft of Edo tsumami kanzashi.
