Shichifuku "Seven Lucky Gods" Dobin Teapot — White Porcelain, In-Glaze
Miyama's Shichifuku dobin teapot in white porcelain with the Seven Lucky Gods in in-glaze blue. Slip-cast in Mizunami, Gifu. 430 ml, rattan handle.
A heptagonal dobin teapot in Miyama's Shichifuku (七福 — "Seven Lucky") series, slip-cast in translucent white porcelain at the workshop's Mizunami kiln in Gifu, Japan. The Seven Lucky Gods are painted across the body in playful in-glaze cobalt — the pigment is laid between glaze layers and fired so the figures sink into the surface rather than sitting on top — and the rattan handle is hand-bound to the porcelain bow.
Shichifukujin — the seven gods who sail Japan's Treasure Ship at New Year, each bringing a different blessing — have been an auspicious folk-craft motif since the Edo period. Miyama softens them into wandering, child-like figures, painted with the same restraint you'd find on an old sometsuke piece. It's a teapot built to be used daily, not displayed.
