A silk hydrangea (ajisai, 紫陽花) brooch, folded petal by petal in the centuries-old tsumami technique. Hydrangeas bloom through Japan's rainy season — the month when most flowers shrink back, ajisai gets quietly more brilliant. The plant changes color in response to the soil it grows in, which is part of why it has come to stand for adaptability, gentle persistence, and a kind of quiet strength.
This piece is built in saturated deep blues with accent pearls — the version of ajisai seen on a rainy morning, leaves still wet, the whole flower somehow brighter than the sky behind it. The 55 mm cluster gives the brooch real presence on a raincoat lapel or a navy jacket.
Made by Tsumami Kanzashi Ayano, the Matsudo workshop led by Ayano Fujii — a designated maker of Chiba Prefecture's traditional craft of Edo tsumami kanzashi.
