Documented
We interviewed the carvers of Kamakura-bori, a lacquer craft with 800 years of history.
A round Kamakura-bori tray from Sansuido, a workshop near Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine in Kamakura. Restrained cherry blossoms are carved by hand into katsura wood, then finished in layers of urushi lacquer. Quiet enough for everyday use, refined enough to mark a wedding or a gift for someone you respect.
Kamakura-bori is a craft born in Kamakura, the city where Japan's first samurai government was founded. The design is carved first and the lacquer is built up over it, so the relief softens and gains depth with years of use.
