Documented

We interviewed the carvers of Kamakura-bori, a lacquer craft with 800 years of history.

Chopsticks from Sansuido, a Kamakura-bori workshop near Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine in Kamakura. Each pair carries umebachi, the plum blossom drawn as a family crest, carved by hand near the top and finished in layers of urushi lacquer. You feel the carving under your fingertips every time you pick them up.

The plum is one of the first flowers to open at the end of winter, and a quiet symbol of resilience in Japan.

Kamakura-bori is a craft born in Kamakura, the city where Japan's first samurai government was founded. Craftsmen carve the design into wood first, then build up urushi lacquer over it, so the relief softens and deepens with years of use.
