Documented

We interviewed the carvers of Kamakura-bori, a lacquer craft with 800 years of history.

Chopsticks from a Kamakura-bori workshop near Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine in Kamakura. Each pair carries ginkgo leaves, a nod to the great ginkgo tree of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, carved by hand near the top and finished in layers of urushi lacquer. You feel the carving under your fingertips every time you pick them up.

Tsurugaoka Hachimangu is Kamakura's most famous shrine, which makes this pair a fitting souvenir of the city.

Kamakura-bori is a craft born in Kamakura, the city where Japan's first samurai government was founded. Craftsmen carve the design into wood first, then build up urushi lacquer over it, so the relief softens and deepens with years of use.
