A silk chrysanthemum (kiku, 菊) brooch, folded petal by petal in the centuries-old tsumami technique. Kiku has been considered an auspicious flower in Japan for over a thousand years — used in the Chōyō (重陽) seasonal festival on the ninth day of the ninth month to ward off illness and pray for long life. People drank chrysanthemum-scented sake on this day and decorated rooms with the flowers; the imperial crest itself is a 16-petal kiku.

This piece carries those well-wishes in a layered colorway — yellow, mustard, and matcha green — that grounds the brooch in autumn without being dark. Acrylic pearls highlight the center the way dewdrops sit on real chrysanthemums on a cool morning.

Made by Tsumami Kanzashi Ayano, the Matsudo workshop led by Ayano Fujii — a designated maker of Chiba Prefecture's traditional craft of Edo tsumami kanzashi.
