We sat down with Ayano Fujii in her Matsudo workshop, where every petal is folded by hand.

A silk narcissus (suisen, 水仙) brooch, folded petal by petal in the centuries-old tsumami technique. Narcissus blooms quietly while the cold still lingers, and across cultures it has come to stand for hope, renewal, and new beginnings. The flower has long held a place in Japanese winter painting and tea-room arrangements for the same reason.

This piece keeps the form simple (a small bright flower, white silk, a hint of yellow at the center) so it can sit on a coat lapel, a sweater, or a kimono haori without competing with what it's worn on. A reminder, the workshop notes, that even in cold seasons there is light worth carrying with you.

Made by Tsumami Kanzashi Ayano, the Matsudo workshop led by Ayano Fujii, a designated maker of Chiba Prefecture's traditional craft of Edo tsumami kanzashi.

Free shipping on orders over around US$200. Smaller orders ship at a flat rate of ¥2,000 (around US$13).

Packaging
Your order arrives intact, or we replace or refund it. Fragile pieces are wrapped in several protective layers. If anything arrives damaged, email a photo to support@j-doc.jp within 10 days of delivery.

Returns
