A silk camellia (tsubaki, 椿) brooch, folded petal by petal in the centuries-old tsumami technique. Tsubaki has been part of Japanese visual culture since the Heian period, appearing in classical waka and screen paintings. Its evergreen leaves and glossy blooms have made it a symbol of unchanging beauty, dignity, and quiet sincerity — and in the warrior class it took on additional connotations of resolve and clean living.

This piece pairs white silk petals with a muted, slightly dusty red — closer to old lacquer than to vermilion — and a touch of gold thread (金糸) at the center. The 45 mm form keeps the brooch generous on a winter coat or a haori without tipping into ornate.

Made by Tsumami Kanzashi Ayano, the Matsudo workshop led by Ayano Fujii — a designated maker of Chiba Prefecture's traditional craft of Edo tsumami kanzashi.
