Tsumami Zaiku Brooch Orange – Kinmokusei Osmanthus Japanese Silk Flower Pin
A silk kinmokusei (sweet osmanthus, 金木犀) brooch, folded petal by petal in the centuries-old tsumami technique. In Japan, kinmokusei is the flower of early autumn — the tree announces itself by scent before you ever see it. A walk past one is the unmistakable signal that summer is over.
The flowers themselves are tiny, packed densely along the branch. To honor that, the workshop folds each of the brooch's blossoms from a 10 mm square of silk with tweezers and sets them shoulder-to-shoulder until the whole 40 mm cluster reads as one body of orange. The maker calls the process "a kind of moving meditation."
Made by Tsumami Kanzashi Ayano, the Matsudo workshop led by Ayano Fujii — a designated maker of Chiba Prefecture's traditional craft of Edo tsumami kanzashi.
