Documented
We sat down with Ayano Fujii in her Matsudo workshop, where every petal is folded by hand.
A silk peony (botan, 牡丹) brooch, folded petal by petal in the centuries-old tsumami technique. Long called the "king of flowers" (百花の王) in East Asia, the peony has stood for abundance, prosperity, and a kind of dignified beauty for centuries, a flower for moments that deserve weight.
This piece carries that weight in a deep, saturated pink, accented with fine gold thread (金糸) along the inner petals. The shape is open and full enough to feel celebratory but compact enough (45 mm) to wear with a tailored jacket or a haori. A piece for someone whose days could use a quiet reminder of richness.
Made by Tsumami Kanzashi Ayano, the Matsudo workshop led by Ayano Fujii, a designated maker of Chiba Prefecture's traditional craft of Edo tsumami kanzashi.
