Documented
We interviewed the carvers of Kamakura-bori, a lacquer craft with 800 years of history.
A flower-shaped (rinka) Kamakura-bori tray from Sansuido, a workshop near Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine in Kamakura. The whole surface is covered in toukon, the rhythmic marks left by the carving knife, with a small cut at each corner as an accent. No flowers, no figures: just the hand of the craftsman, finished in layers of urushi lacquer.
Kamakura-bori is a craft born in Kamakura, the city where Japan's first samurai government was founded. The design is carved first and the lacquer is built up over it, so the texture softens and gains depth with years of use.
